Too many people raise the white flag as soon as they experience an obstacle.
This is nearly always a bad decision. Because there are lots of ways how you can turn a first “no” into a “yes, please”.
Luckily my client Paula* had the stamina to see things through. Here is a message by message account on how she got herself a job interview – with a little guidance from my side.
*All names are changed. Well, except my one, of course. 😉
How it started.
Setting: Paula had found a position that she really loved. It was by far her number one choice. As a client of my “Expats Job Offer Miracle” she had sent me a link to the hiring managers profile – and I had made an introduction for her.
Then I received this message:
Transcription of our coaching via LinkedIN chat.
October 6 Paula: “Dear Chris, I am a bit concern about to have a call with hiring manager because now there are at least 3 potentials that I might have a call soon. If there is an accepting my request from hiring manager to have a call with him, are you okay that I will use your WhatsApps for a short coaching session with you before the call with hiring manager. Best Regards, Paula” Chris Pyak: “Thank you for making me smile, Paula. 🙂 You realise that you are worried, because things go MUCH BETTER than for most people? 🙂 🙂 🙂
Do not worry: I have your back. These calls are just conversations between two professionals. Focus on the other persons needs – and on finding out how you can help them. Then you will not be nervous.
The practical “step by step” on how to lead this conversations: That we will discuss in a coaching call before your first call with a manager.
If you get managers on the phone: That means that you will get a job. Maybe not the first, second, third one – but eventually for sure.
October 11 Chris Pyak: “Hi Paula, Please sent a contact request to Stefan F*. He promised to have a call with you. This is what he wrote me: “Ok, yes she can send me a PN with his e-mail and some suggestions for an appointment – I will send her a google meet invite afterwards”
Paula: “Thanks Chris, I will send him a private message to him about my email address and time slots for google meet. I will propose him to have a meeting with me on Friday”
October 18 Paula: “Hi Chris, The Material Scientist position at one.five where I have a call with Stefan last week, is no longer available for job application (see the attached image). BYW, the attached file is the target book for week 6. Best Regards, Paula.
Chris Pyak: “Hi Paula, just because it is no longer on the website does NOT mean that the position is filled. It’s definitely worth checking with Siegfried. Quite often these positions have a runtime of 30 days or so – and then expire. But the job itself might still be available.” Paula: “Hi Chris, I did send a message to Stefan about the job status. But, this week it seems that he is not active in LinkedIn. Shall I contact the hiring manager directly. I meant Manuale D.* Best Regards, Paula”
Chris Pyak: “Did you ask Siegfried for an introduction?”
Paula: “No, I did not because I thought it is over.”
Chris Pyak: “It’s not over until it’s over. 🙂 You should write Stefan and ask. :)” Paula: “Understand, I will do that. Thank you for your advice. 🙂”
October 19
Paula: “Hello Chris, I did send email to Stefan to ask him introducing me to Manuela. During waiting for Stefan feedback, may I ask you to review my cover letter? Pls see below;
Dear Manuela, (in the following text Paula described the managers problem as Stefan had explained it and a concrete experience that Paula had solving a similar outcome.) Paula: “Hi Chris, I received feedback from Stefan. He forwarded my email to Manuela. What should I do next? Best Regards, Paula Chris Pyak: “Reach out to Manuela on LinkedIn with a personal message. Mention Stefan and say smth nice about him. (Appreciation for his kindness.) October 20 Paula: Hi Chris, Okay, I will reach out to Manuela. BTW, I was contacted by an HR representative from COMPANY NAME regarding to Material Scientist role. It seems that Stefan’s email introduction to Manuela yesterday really worked. I have scheduled a call with you for interview preparation on Monday. Best Regards, Paula.”
Paula is now already in the third round of interviews – and it looks good. The fourth interview will be her final interview – and then, hopefully, she will write me: “I got the job”. I don’t take on new clients for the Expats Job Offer Miracle before February 1, 2024. But if you like:
You can book an individual coaching session with me this year – and if you decide to later also book the Expats Job Offer Miracle, then I will take subtract your payment for the individual coaching from the fee for the Expats Job Offer Miracle. A low risk way to test how I can help you. This offer is only valid till 23. December 2023.
I wish you success. Chris
