The gentlemen from Volkswagen where desperate. Here they where, 20 men (women where not present) sitting in front of one young man. A 31 year old Italian, who didn’t even speak German. And he should save their company!
A German carmaker hires a foreign designer. It was unheard of!
Volkswagen had always hired someone who knew “how we do things around here”. Someone who followed the “proven path” and wouldn’t create any wild ideas. Unfortunally – avoiding “wild” ideas got the customers bored. And they went elsewhere.
Now VW was in despair. The corporation had huge debts and might go bankrupt.
They. Needed. Something. New.
SOMEONE new.
Enter Giorgio Giugiaro.
Giorgio Giugiaro should design “the” new Volkswagen. A single model that would – alone – sell so much that it saves Volkswagen from bankruptcy.
And he did.
In 1974 Giorgio Giugiaro designed the Volkswagen Golf.
