You can get what you really want. Most people don’t. But you can.
Here is how.

Spring 2013. A conference room at Hewlett Packard in Germany. I work with a group of young women who want to advance their career. They are frustrated. They feel that their superiors don’t actively promote their career. One of them takes the “hot seat” in our seminar.
Now the other 12 grill her with questions. Did she reach out to other managers? Did she actively search for her next position? Did she make her wishes clear? Suddenly she realizes: The job she wants is available in Palo Alto. She could do it from Düsseldorf. So, she applies.
One months later I am back – and she got her first management position.
June 2013. My wife has an excellent boss. He believes in her talent. But she wants to go to London to meet the rest of her team. Her boss never offered this trip. Finally she takes matters in her own hand. She asks. Her Boss says: “Of course”.
6 weeks later she is at Düsseldorf Airport heading toward London.
Yesterday. I promote our expatriate survey on social networks. Many people “like” my articles. I am grateful, but I wonder: How do I get more readers to share them? I post an article and add a comment: “Please share this post.”
Within two hours more than a dozen readers share the posting.
Get what you want
So, here is the secret:
You want to get what you want?
ASK.
PS: I wasn’t absolutely honest with you here. Most of the time you get what you want. And so do I. Why do we sabotage ourselves? More on this in a future post.
PPS: Do you have friends who need to speak up for themselves? Please share this article with them!
Have you made the same experience?
You are well educated, you have professional experience and most important: You have drive and ambition. You want to make a contribution and build a good career.
But German employers don't value your talent. You apply for job after job. You spent hours editing your CV and cover letter to fit perfectly. And then: You don't even get an answer.
There is a way forward! Chris Pyak and the rest of us at Immigrant Spirit GmbH: We want you to succeed.
